As many as 523 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the state’s total to 8,35,803, even as 595 people were released after treatment. To date, 818,742 people have been released. The state recorded five deaths, bringing the toll to 12,325 people.
Currently, 4,736 people are in treatment. A total of 6 93,945 people aged 13 to 60 have acquired the infection. No less than 1,711 people over the age of 60 and 30,147 under the age of 12 have been infected.
Chennai has registered 168 cases and 192 people have been released after treatment. Two people have died from the infection, while 1,616 people are currently in treatment. To date, 2.30,522 people have tested positive for the infection and 2.24,818 have been released. Chennai’s toll is 4,088 in the district.
Kallakurichi and Perambalur recorded no cases and 19 other districts recorded less than 10 new infections. Ariyalur, Karur, Dharmapuri, Thirupattur and Villupuram recorded only one case each.
All of the people who died had co-morbidities. Three people died in private hospitals and two in public establishments.
The oldest of the deceased was a 74-year-old man from Chengalpattu with type 2 diabetes mellitus. He was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital on January 22, after testing positive for the infection on the 19th. January. He died Sunday morning from pneumonia and respiratory failure induced by COVID-19.
Another private lab, in Vellore, has been approved for COVID-19 testing. The state now has 254 testing centers – 68 in the public sector and 186 in the private sector.
As of the 11th day of vaccination in the state, 4,926 people have been vaccinated.
According to the director of public health and preventive medicine, 4,739 people have received Covishield. Covaxin has been administered to 187 people. To date, 73,953 people have benefited from both vaccines. Of these, 72,253 were administered Covishield.
