President K. Sreeramakrishnan, who tested positive for COVID-19 last Saturday, was transferred to the ICU at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital on Tuesday after developing pneumonia. He was in home quarantine earlier.

While Mr Sreeramakrishnan is on supplemental oxygen in the intensive care unit, his general condition remains stable and satisfactory, hospital sources said.

Pneumonia is a known complication of COVID-19, with around 15% of people with the pandemic developing the disease.

Since Mr Sreeramakrishnan is also on treatment for heart problems, doctors have taken the extra caution of transferring him to intensive care. A medical board has been set up at the MCH to take charge of his treatment.
