Angered by the resignation of Karnataka’s Minister of Water Resources, Ramesh Jarkiholi, due to the sex-for-work scandal, a man on Wednesday attempted to set himself on fire in Gokak, 70 km from here.
The attempt was made during a demonstration by supporters of the minister, police said.
As word spread about the minister’s resignation, supporters invaded the Basaveshwara circle in Gokak.
They burned tires, raised slogans containing Jarkiholi’s photograph, asking him not to resign as the accusations, they said, were baseless and futile.
During the commotion, one of the supporters poured gasoline on his body and was about to ignite when the police got there and took him into custody.
The minister sent his resignation to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa following the leaked videos and the police complaint alleging the sexual exploitation of a woman under the pretext of giving her a job in a government organization.
