The BCCI’s decision to suspend the middle of the IPL through the edition could cause the T20 World Cup to be out of the country later this year.

India has been awarded the 16-team marquee event to be played in October-November. But tournament director Dheeraj Malhotra recently confirmed that the UAE was a back-up venue for the tournament.

The suspension of the IPL will be a major deterrent to assuring the International Cricket Council (ICC) and participation of cricket associations regarding the matter of the event to be held in India. In fact, a BCCI official admitted that it would be a miracle if they agreed to travel.

“It is a major road, everyone is apprehensive. We are still confident of hosting the tournament and hope that the Wave Subside and teams agree to travel to India. At the moment, it seems a distant possibility and we may have to host the event in the UAE, ”the official said.

The ICC Annual Conference is held in June to finalize the venue for the tournament.

Despite several stakeholders including key personnel in organizing the event, apprehensions were expressed about hosting IPL 2021 in India during the pandemic, with the BCCI treating the event as a dry run for the T20 World Cup. In early March, plans to stage a tournament at four venues in the Mumbai-Pune corridor, avoid air travel, were presented to top BCCI officials.

But the board decided to take a calculated risk and finalized a caravan format with six host cities.
