The victim had filed an FIR against the perpetrator of the teasing accusations in 2018.
A man whose daughter was sexually harassed was reportedly shot dead by the accused, who had been released on bail since 2018, and his associates in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, police said in the intervening hours of 1 and 2 March.
The deceased’s daughter, Awanish Sharma, said her father was shot dead by six to seven people who shot her temple as well as the chest.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. Monday in the village of Maujpur in Sasni.
“Awanish Sharma was shot dead by Gaurav Sharma and his friends,” said SP Hathras Vineet Jaiswal, “he was seriously injured and died on his way to hospital.”
In 2018, Awanish Sharma filed an FIR against Gaurav Sharma for “chedkhani” (molestation or eve-teasing), Jaiswal said. In July that year, Gaurav was sent to jail and released on bail after a month, the officer added.
Following the police complaint, there was still blood between the two families, police said.
On Monday, when Gaurav Sharma’s wife and maternal aunt went to a temple in the village for puja, they had an argument with Awanish Sharma’s two daughters, who were already there, during the previous incident of sexual harassment, the SP said.
Gaurav Sharma and Awanish Sharma quickly reached the place and there was a “heated discussion” (heated discussion) between the two, Jaiswal said.
Enraged, Gaurav Sharma called boys from his family there and shot Awanish Sharma, police said.
Upon complaint from the victim’s family, an FIR was registered against four named defendants.
In tears in front of the media, Awanish Sharma’s daughter called for justice. “Please do me justice,” she said with her hands folded. “First, he committed the chedkhani with me. My father filed a complaint. And he shot my daddy out of boredom, ”she said.
Mr Jaiswal said teams had been formed to arrest the defendants. “We will stop them as soon as possible and take the toughest measures against the four,” he said.
