World No.3 Simona Halep was sidelined on Tuesday, losing 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the round of 16 to Belgium’s Elise Mertens at the Madrid Open.

Halep had completed the first two laps on Spanish clay without losing a set, but she finished second in a game that resulted in 15 breaks of service.

Halep produced 10 double faults in the game against Mertens’ nine.
