City police have stepped up enforcement of curbs introduced by the government due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

On the first day of the restrictions, police took legal action against 972 people for violating pandemic standards. While 195 people were enrolled under Kerala’s Epidemic Diseases Ordinance 2020, another 774 were fined a cumulative Rs. 3.87 lakh for failing to wear masks outdoors. As many as 37,825 people have received strict warnings from the police for other violations.

City Police Commissioner and Inspector General Balram Kumar Upadhyay urged the public to cooperate with the restrictions and only leave their homes for essential activities. Home delivery should be encouraged. While those who work in the workshops must wear double-layered masks, pandemic protocol must be strictly adhered to. Only take-out packages and services will be allowed in hotels and restaurants.

While motorists should have self-report forms and other documents with them when traveling, passengers should meet COVID-19 standards inside vehicles. (MOE)
