While the SETC bus was heading to Chennai from Vedaranyam, the truck was heading to Chidambaram from Cuddalore.

Three people were killed on the spot and 37 injured in a head-on collision between a State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) bus and a truck loaded with fish in Periyapattu near Chidambaram in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased was identified as bus driver Sivakumar, 42, and passengers A. Anbarasan and R. Vairavan from Nagapattinam district.

While the SETC bus was heading to Chennai from Vedaranyam, the truck was heading to Chidambaram from Cuddalore.

Police said the accident took place around 3 a.m. There was no proper lighting and the two vehicles collided as they negotiated a dangerous curve at Periyapattu. The bus overturned under the impact of the accident.

Truck driver R. Ayappan, 51, from Neyveli, was seriously injured and was admitted to the government hospital in Cuddalore.

The injured were admitted to general hospitals in Cuddalore and Chidambaram. One case has been registered.
