The opportunities and benefits are plentiful, with the advent of online job fairs, interviews and more.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the hiring of students on campuses across the country. With most educational institutions suspending classes and students returning to their hometowns, the recruitment process was under severe strain. With the rise and acceptance of virtual interactions, many companies, individually and in collaboration with universities, have organized online job fairs, hackathons and internships. While there was some uncertainty about the success of the process, most recruiters and participants realized that digitizing the interview process reduced reliance on a third party and made the selection process more efficient. Online recruitments have three advantages:
Increased opportunities: With remote working becoming the norm, organizations are evolving their operational and marketing strategies. This created a demand for digitally native niche communities that couldn’t thrive in a brick and mortar ecosystem. This created job opportunities for students in sectors that did not exist before or in companies that improved their offerings. Additionally, as companies move away from physical office space, reduced financial pressure allows capital to be redirected toward hiring interns and recruits.
More accessibility: As the interview process and possible internships / jobs become digital in nature, students living anywhere can apply for a job without feeling limited by location. On the other hand, recruiters can also choose without compromising the quality of the candidate. Many virtual event hosting platforms are gifted with technology that allows for an immersive and interactive interview with students across the country and even abroad.
Cost reduction: Students often operate on limited spending money and therefore cannot afford to travel for every interview they wish to attend. Likewise, employers also bear the logistical costs when organizing large-scale job fairs / internships. The whole process takes place seamlessly online, the expenses are much lower making the recruiting process more inclusive for the student and more economical for the recruiter. It also allows students to continue living and working in their home city without incurring additional living expenses that they would have had to incur if they had to move.
